Library and Information Centre AUTh

The Library and Information Centre is an independent decentralized unit of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, comprising the Central Library and its various branches.

The AUTh Library was founded in 1925 and began operating in 1927. Initially housed in the old School of Philosophy building, it moved to its own four-storey premises in the heart of the university campus in 1974. The new Central Library building was inaugurated in 2000.

The Central Library is situated at the heart of the University Campus, opposite the Thessaloniki International Fair trade gate and between the Administration Building and the School of Engineering. It occupies two buildings: the old building, housing the administrative services and the student reading room, and the adjacent new building, housing the scientific reading room and the Online Reference, Loan & Interlibrary Loan Service.

Library of Visual and Applied Arts

The Library of Visual and Applied Arts is housed in the Thomas building in Thermi (above Praktiker). The library space is divided into the following spaces: books, journals, audiovisual projection room, and circulation desk. Books and journals are located in an open-stacks area, which is also used as a reading room.

The Library collection consists of monographs, audiovisual material, journals, a collection of posters for art exhibitions, and an archive of invitations to art events (organized mainly in Thessaloniki from 1991-2010). The Library keeps a printed index of the Greek journal ARTI (issues 1-39, 1990-1998).

The Library of Visual and Applied Arts started operating in 1985, immediately after the establishment of the School of Visual and Applied Arts. The scientific management of its materials by specialized library staff started in 1990.

Faculty of Economic and Political Sciences Library

The unified Library of the Faculty of Economic and Political Sciences aims to better serve the educational and research needs of its Schools. Its collection contains more than 30.000 volumes of books and 170 journal titles, of which 75 are active. The topics of the collection specialize in economics and political sciences, but also include material in related disciplines, such as Philosophy, Religion, History, Social Sciences, Communication and Mass Media, and Law.

The Library collection includes a valuable collection of rare books and a collection of textbooks and dictionaries. The donation of Aristovoulos Manesis is particularly important.

The Library of Economics operates since the academic year 1998-1999, while the Library of Political Sciences operates since June 2001. The two libraries were merged in the summer of 2019 and the opening took place on October 8, 2019.
